Celebratory Celebrations Continue Despite Forecasts The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland. "A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the weather service. Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters. To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster. Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England. Travel is expected to be impacted. People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road. Delays and cancellations are expected on trains and buses. The Mercury Set to Fall Further With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country. About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands. Health Advisories Activated In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
